COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers trained in Spokane on Jan. 22 for the Point in Time Count, a week-long survey to collect data on homelessness. The survey gathers data including age, race, and barriers to care + local residency before homelessness as required by HUD and will begin on January 27.  FOX 28 Spokane

CRIME NEWS

  • Federal immigration agents detained Tiul Caal and his 10-year-old daughter after a school drop-off on Jan. 9, sending them from Spokane to a Texas processing facility (awaiting a March court hearing) where the family now faces an uncertain future.  The Spokesman-Review

CULTURE NEWS

  • Stand-up comedian Anjelah Johnson-Reyes will perform her Family Reunion tour at the Fox Theater in Spokane this Saturday. She will share stories on mental health and gratitude while reflecting on her journey from NFL cheerleader to stage star.  Spokane Public Radio
  • Train Dreams, an independent film shot in Spokane, Colville, Tekoa and Chewelah, has been nominated for four Oscar awards—best picture, adapted screenplay, cinematography and original song. Visit Spokane will launch a digital tour of filming locations to boost local tourism if the film wins an Oscar.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Comedian Anjelah Johnson-Reyes will perform her Family Reunion tour at the Fox Theater on Saturday, Jan. 24. She discussed her career journey and touring with toddler Rosie during a recent interview.  Spokane Public Radio

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A study by WalletHub on Jan. 22 found that Washington ranked 49th for drivers in 2026 due to high gas prices, high car theft rates, & limited repair access; Idaho ranked 20th.  FOX 28 Spokane

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane Fire District 8 received new brush trucks; the equipment will boost wildfire response + support local safety. Officials say the vehicles are ready to enhance operations immediately.  KXLY
  • Local government officials have proposed new funding for Maddie's Place — a community resource center — to expand its services. The proposal is under review and could lead to improved local support later this month.  KXLY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Wednesday's prep wrestling action saw Mead boys extend their unbeaten streak to 6-0 with a 67-9 win over Ferris while Cheney girls recorded a 58-24 win to move to a 5-0 record (local teams continue strong performances).  The Spokesman-Review
