COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Floyd McComas, 85, recalls 49 years of Bloomsday running — he now trains through walking and gym visits before the race and plans to stay on track for at least five more years.  The Spokesman-Review

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bing Crosby’s 1954 film White Christmas and Disney’s 2004 film The Incredibles were added on January 29 by the Library of Congress to the National Film Registry for preservation. Both films highlight Spokane roots, with Crosby moving here at age 3 plus actor Craig Nelson having attended local schools.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • The contest invites student artists (grades 6–12) from Eastern Washington and North Idaho to submit artwork with a statement on courage and resistance by Mar. 13; entries are due by Mar. 15 and winners will be honored at Temple Beth Shalom on April 14.  The Spokesman-Review

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The federal government delayed its PFAS (forever chemicals) cleanup plan, moving the deadline from July 2026 to June 2032 for about 4,000 homes near Fairchild Air Force Base and Spokane International Airport, with Senator Murray now seeking funding details.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane Regional Health District will hold panel interviews on Feb. 19 for finalists to fill its top administrator role after Alicia Thompson was fired in September. The board, executive leadership, and community stakeholders will each ask questions as the search moves forward.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Washington lawmakers led by Representative Shaun Scott are discussing a bill to cut the standard work week from 40 to 32 hours with overtime after 32 hours in a seven-day period. The proposal also offers one hour of paid sick leave for every 32 hours worked to boost work-life balance.  FOX 28 Spokane

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new research study will test the PFAS water filters in 60 Airway Heights homes near the airport to see if they remove dangerous chemicals effectively. A professor from the University of Colorado will lead the testing as residents remain concerned about water safety.  KXLY
  • The City of Spokane received a $200,000 grant from the U.S. Conference of Mayors & American Beverage Association to expand its Youth Wellness Zone at On Track Academy. The funds will boost staffing, guest speakers, and youth projects supporting student-led mental health initiatives.  FOX 28 Spokane

  • The Gonzaga women won 74-66 in overtime over San Francisco at War Memorial Gym on Thursday. Freshman forward Lauren Whittaker was key & the team now stands 15-7 overall as it prepares for a three-game stretch at Washington State.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Gonzaga Bulldogs face Saint Mary’s Gaels this Saturday at McCarthey Center in a 'One Piece' activation that features a cameo by Monkey D. Luffy and limited edition giveaways + themed halftime performances while a Spokane Valley Comic Book Shop hosts exclusive card game tournaments.  The Spokesman-Review
