CULTURE NEWS

  • Spokane International Airport opened in 1965 with its distinctive Googie design and has grown from a Depression-era airfield to a busy hub handling over 4 million passengers annually. Recent additions have blended sweeping curves — a nod to its Space Age roots — with modern rectilinear forms.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The Vagina Monologues returns to Gonzaga University’s Magnuson Theatre (its campus venue) from Feb. 12-14 with over 20 participants performing the 30-year milestone play as proceeds go to the Spokane YWCA. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washington lawmakers are considering a tax break for equipment at two new data centers in Spokane County (requiring projects to meet job standards) with construction set to begin after June 30 and before July 1, 2035. The bill would extend similar tax credits to local projects.  The Spokesman-Review

HEALTH NEWS

  • Spokane Area Jewish Family Services is hosting Patient Advocate Nancy Ruffner for a virtual talk on solo aging this Thursday and Feb. 19 to help seniors living alone amid growing challenges and changes to SNAP and Medicare. Tickets cost ($12 online or $18 in-person).  The Spokesman-Review
  • Family and friends gathered today at Vitalant Blood Donation Center to honor fallen Marine Jake Hess with an annual blood drive that scheduled 48 appointments and expects to collect 35-units to help nearly 100 local patients, continuing his legacy as a regular donor.  KXLY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Spokane Valley residents traveled to California yesterday to watch the Seahawks win Super Bowl 60 at Levi’s Stadium — fireworks and confetti created a once-in-a-lifetime celebration for local fans.  The Spokesman-Review
  • On Saturday, Gonzaga won 81-61 over Oregon State at Gill Coliseum after a strong second half that featured improved defense and only two turnovers. The team tied its record for minimal mistakes + a balanced offense helped build a double-digit lead + adjustments turned early setbacks into a record-setting win.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Mt. Spokane Ski Area announced adjusted hours due to a slow winter start. The facility will close Monday through Thursday (except Presidents Day) and be open Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with night skiing from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  KXLY
