COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Two boys from Hayden and Tri-Cities formed a strong bond while fighting leukemia at Providence Sacred Heart in Spokane on March 5. They played video games and shared meals together, giving their families comfort during tough times.  FOX 28 Spokane

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Spokane Jewelers Guild held its regular meeting on Feb. 25 at Spokane Gallery and Framing, where members displayed insect-themed pieces including a copper butterfly pendant and an imaginative moonflower beetle brooch. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Spokane Valley jumped above $4 per gallon on March 5 as a Middle East conflict disrupted global oil supply, raising local rates by 17 to 22 cents (analysts say prices may continue to rise).  FOX 28 Spokane

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane County Commissioners announced a pedestrian safety project near Mead High School after a fatal accident this year at Hastings Road and Bellwood Drive. The project will upgrade lighting and install a pedestrian-activated crosswalk beacon when parts arrive (with local sponsors contributing funds).  FOX 28 Spokane

HEALTH NEWS

  • Shades of Motherhood Network received a $30,000 annual grant from the Washington State Perinatal Collaborative to support mental health programs for pregnant women and new mothers over the next three years. The grant funds free doula services and group therapy sessions — addressing service gaps for Black mothers in the community.  FOX 28 Spokane

SPORTS NEWS

  • Gonzaga Prep girls lost 65-52 to Kennedy Catholic in a state quarterfinal game at the Tacoma Dome on Thursday. The loss moved them to the consolation bracket and they will face Lake Stevens today at 9 a.m.  KXLY
  • The Mt. Spokane Wildcats lost a 3A boys state quarterfinal on Thursday — they now enter the consolation bracket to face the loser of Bellevue and Lincoln on Friday. Senior Jaden Ghoreishi and sophomore Tysen Lewis each scored 10 points as Eastside Catholic outscored them in the middle quarters.  FOX 28 Spokane
