ECONOMY NEWS

  • During the winter, Health Sciences & Services Authority gave over $4.4 million in matching grants to 10 Spokane County bioscience and health care organizations – Gestalt Diagnostics, Impact Laboratories, Inherent Biosciences, and others – to boost economic development. It also awarded Access to Care grants totaling about $565,000 to groups including Asante Health and Joya Child & Family Development to address the local provider shortage.  Spokane Journal of Business

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane is thinking about rejoining the county aquifer protection area after 20 years of not participating + the City Council will ask voters to decide on the proposal later this year. The measure will add a $15 fee on single family homes to raise about $1.8 million a year for water protection as PFAS and climate change pose new threats.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • On Monday, March 24, the Spokane City Council approved an interim zoning ordinance that eliminated downtown building height limits; officials say the change is meant to boost economic development + create diverse housing and job opportunities and will remain in effect until Sept. 24.  FOX 28 Spokane

HEALTH NEWS

  • MultiCare Deaconess team treats patients with opioid withdrawal by offering care such as Narcan and connecting them with local programs, and the two-person team won the Washington State Hospital Association's Community Health Leadership Award last week. Peer support liaison Chandelle Gill & nurse Sarah Welty lead efforts to make patients feel respected and get treatment that meets their needs.  The Spokesman-Review

SPORTS NEWS

  • Gonzaga lost to Houston 81-76 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday—ending their streak of nine consecutive Sweet 16 appearances. The school will join a rebuilt Pac-12 with new revenue sharing rules starting this summer and must adjust its strategy to stay competitive.  The Spokesman-Review
