COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local organizations in East Valley will offer a free, seven-week 'Strengthening Families Program' for parents and youth ages 10 to 14 on Thursdays from April 17 to May 29 at 12325 E. Grace Lane—registration is due by April 11 as space is limited to 10 families. The program will include a family dinner, separate sessions for parents and youth, and a joint activity each week along with free activities for younger siblings.  KXLY
  • Friends of the Bluff, a local nonprofit dedicated to maintaining High Drive Bluff, canvassed door-to-door in the High Drive neighborhood on March 30 to raise funds for stairs at a public access point near Rocket Market— they remain about $10,000 short of their $58,000 goal and plan to secure the remaining funds by summer so people can safely access the nature trails.  KXLY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On March 30 at 1 p.m., firefighters rescued two 11-year-olds stuck on a sand embankment at Hangman Creek after their parents called 911 when the children began slipping—High Drive was closed from Manito Blvd to Bernard Street by 2 p.m.  KXLY

CRIME NEWS

  • Spokane Police said that the fatal collision occurred on Friday just after 3:30 p.m. at Market St. and Francis Ave where a young man died—investigators now seek help to identify a witness from surveillance showing a dark Ford extended cab pickup truck with a light stripe along the bottom, and they urge anyone with information to call Crime Check at 509-456-2233 and reference incident #2025-20060269.  KHQ

CULTURE NEWS

  • At Saturday's Masterworks concert, Mateusz Wolski led the Spokane Symphony in a stirring performance of Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor that captivated the audience, and he finished with a distinctive encore — an original piece inspired by astronaut Anne McClain — showing his deep commitment to music.  The Spokesman-Review

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, downtown Spokane was busy with sports as kids took part in a youth clinic at ONE Spokane Stadium and local fans watched college basketball regionals along with the Mariners' 4-2 loss. The community will see more sports action in the coming days as teams prepare for upcoming tournaments.  The Spokesman-Review
  • UCLA overcame a setback when star player Lauren Betts—benched early in the game—saw her teammates rally to defeat LSU 72-65 in the Spokane Regional 1 final. Betts earned Regional 1 MVP with 17 points while UCLA advanced to the Final Four and will face the winner of the UConn and Southern Cal Regional 4 final tonight at the Arena.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Today, Spokane fans watch an Elite Eight game as top-seeded USC meets No. 2 seed UConn for the Region 4 title and a spot in the Final Four. USC plays without star JuJu Watkins — three freshmen have stepped up in his place — while UConn has advanced with strong wins and the winner will face UCLA on Friday in Tampa.  The Spokesman-Review
