- ➤ On Tuesday, the Department of Health and Human Services fired managers and notified the union at the Spokane mining safety lab that about 90 union workers will lose their jobs effective June 30. The move leaves the lab without clear supervision to continue its work on mining and wildland firefighter safety—raising concerns over future safety measures. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ Today, the city of Spokane implemented a new policy that restricts smoking paraphernalia sales downtown by requiring vendors to provide naloxone (Narcan) free of charge with items such as glass pipes and foil. - ➤ The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health announced that up to 875 workers were slated for layoffs, with nearly 200 in Spokane, as part of a federal effort to cut 10,000 jobs overall plus key safety programs for firefighters and people affected by 9/11 may be weakened.
