  • The Seattle Seahawks visited Liberty Lake on Saturday as part of their 50th anniversary to host a Community Day event in Spokane Valley where local youth attended football and cheer clinics and met figures like safety Jerrick Reed II and team dancer Geena. The team also donated $250K for the HUB Sports Center’s Fields for Our Future capital campaign—adding a $5,000 grant to support local youth sports.  KHQ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bloomsday is offering a free digital BloomsDeals Savings Pass that gives shoppers discounts at downtown businesses from May 1 to June 1. Registration is open for businesses to join the event set for May 4—participants can sign up quickly to take advantage of the savings.  KXLY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Humanities Washington lost $6 million in federal funding for three outreach programs, including a family reading program held weekly at Spokane Public Library. The funding cut may reduce local arts and cultural education as similar changes affect groups in Idaho.  Spokane Public Radio
  • A portrait of Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel by Ridgeline High School junior Grace Brinkmann won the top prize at the Jessica Stein Memorial Art Contest—part of the Spokane Community Observance of the Holocaust set for April 23 at Temple Beth Shalom, where a candlelight vigil and music will be held. More than 100 entries were received from middle and high school students, and the contest honored 80 years since the end of World War II.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane parks officials say every park bathroom will be renovated or replaced once voters approve a 20-year, $240 million levy that will update 40 of the 85 bathrooms and improve others; the plan will also add more maintenance staff and park rangers—efforts aimed at reducing vandalism and increasing accessibility.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane Valley Fire Department Chief Frank Soto Jr. and Fire Commissioner Patrick Burch were in Olympia on April 12 when Gov. Bob Ferguson signed HB 1172 into law, allowing fire districts to dissolve civil service systems if most employees agree — the law will take effect later this year.  FOX 28 Spokane
