COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Friends of the Spokane Public Library is hosting its annual book sale at Shadle Park Library from April 23 to 25. Books cost $1 with a member presale (3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on April 23) and proceeds help support library programs.  FOX 28 Spokane

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Spokane Riverkeeper is hosting a free, family-friendly cleanup on Saturday, April 18 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at High Bridge Park to remove trash from the river and teach volunteers about conservation (food trucks and educational tables will be available).  FOX 28 Spokane
  • State officials are preparing for a longer, drier wildfire season + scientists say that rising temperatures from a developing El Niño and early snowmelt could worsen fire risks if rainfall does not return soon.  KHQ
  • Windy conditions are forecast for the Inland Northwest this week, and Avista advises residents to charge devices, unplug electronics, and secure flashlights to guard against power outages — tips shared in an advisory on April 14.  FOX 28 Spokane

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Natural Resources began training over 500 seasonal firefighters on April 14 for wildfire season. Training includes fuel reduction work (such as building fuel breaks and hose lays) to ready crews from across the Inland Northwest for active fire response.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Spokane City Council is set to vote on an ordinance that would require landlords to provide portable AC units when indoor temperatures exceed 80°F to keep apartments safe during heat. The proposal, sponsored by council members Paul Dillon (lead sponsor) and Kitty Klitzke, would take effect in 2031 if approved.  Spokane Public Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Schweitzer Wellbeing Center will close on May 1 for renovation and expansion, with work expected to finish in September.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Frontier Ice Arena in Coeur d'Alene is fundraising to add a second hockey rink — it has raised nearly $2 million so far and needs an extra $3.5 million to host more tournaments and youth leagues; Spokane Valley is also planning its own two-rink facility.  FOX 28 Spokane
