- ➤ Cowles Company announced it will donate The Spokesman-Review with a $2 million gift (if matching funds are raised) to Comma Community Journalism Lab to shift the 132-year-old paper to a nonprofit model that partners with local schools and universities. The transfer will occur in the next three to 12 months as Comma builds its own accounting and benefits systems (a key step for independent operations). Spokane Journal of Business
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On April 14th at 2:05 p.m., Spokane Valley deputies responded to a report of a man tagging a high school and local business with spray paint; after the suspect fled on foot and jumped fences, a deputy tackled him when he struck an officer, and deputies later booked 22-year-old Kevin Ariza with four felonies and one misdemeanor for damaging property and assaulting law enforcement. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ PFAS chemicals have been detected in the Spokane River north of downtown at levels below drinking water standards — but EWU research shows that levels increase further north. Spokane Riverkeepers are closely monitoring the situation because they worry that even low levels in fish might eventually affect water quality — and more tests will follow. The Spokesman-Review
