- ➤ Spokane Valley Parks and Recreation is hosting free Arbor Day activities starting today with a self-guided tree identification tour at Mirabeau Meadows — on April 25, families will also visit Mirabeau Point Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for kids' activities and seedling giveaways. KXLY
- ➤ The Spokane County Master Gardener Foundation will hold its Garden Fair on April 25—26 at the WSU Spokane County Extension Office on N. Havana St. with appointment-based shopping and an express checkout line to help manage crowds; it will be followed by Garden Expo on May 10 and the Friends of Manito Plant Sale on June 7, and funds raised will support local master gardener programs. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Spokane Public Schools reported more student participation in extracurricular activities after a no-phone policy was set in August 2024 and the Engage IRL program was launched. The district said the policy helped nearly 3,000 students join clubs and boost daily attendance—and it plans to expand opportunities for younger students. KXLY
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On April 17th, 2025, the Washington State Supreme Court overturned a Spokane ordinance that banned public camping near schools, parks, and daycares—ruling the city misused its initiative process. Local government officials will now decide on next steps as the decision leaves future camping regulations unclear. FOX 28 Spokane
- ➤ Spokane Valley voters will decide in August if a new 0.1% sales tax should fund more policing by helping hire 10 new deputies and cover equipment costs. The City Council approved the measure on Tuesday by a 5-1 vote, with councilman Merkel voting against it—he said taxpayers should not bear the cost of funding public safety alone.
