- ➤ Hundreds of volunteers joined the Earth Day cleanup at High Bridge Park and People’s Park—a project organized by the Spokane Riverkeeper to protect the Spokane River. The community event brought locals together to care for their shared environment. KHQ

- ➤ Travel expert Rick Steves will speak at Northern Quest Resort and Casino on Friday. He will share travel lessons from trips to places like Palestine, Cuba and Iran and said that culture shock helps people learn about each other — ideas from his book Travel as a Political Act. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels asked county commissioners for a raise to boost his salary by over $30,000—he said his pay is falling behind that of his command staff. He proposed tying his wage to that of an undersheriff and cutting an inspector position to save $65,000 over three years, and commissioners will vote on the change soon. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ Leon Panetta, the former secretary of defense, will visit Spokane this week and receive the Thomas S. Foley Award for Distinguished Public Service from WSU’s institute. He warned that American leaders must work together or the nation will face decline—stressing the need for strong leadership to guide the country. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ The federal government will enforce Real ID rules for domestic flights on May 7 and Washington offices are busy so people are advised to book an appointment. Washington’s Enhanced Driver’s License works as a Real ID, costs $116 for a new license or $7 per year for an update, and needs proof of citizenship, identity, residency, and a Social Security number—residents are urged to act now. - ➤ The Spokane Chiefs rallied from a 4-1 deficit to beat the Victoria Royals 5-4 in overtime at Memorial Arena on Saturday. Andrew Cristall scored with 2 seconds left — the team now leads the series 3-2 as Games 6 and 7 will be held at Spokane Arena on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ On Friday, high school sports in the Greater Spokane League saw Ferris beat Mead 15-4 in baseball with Bo Johnson recording three hits and four RBIs, and Mt. Spokane won 13-1 in softball as Emme Bond went 4 for 4 with five RBIs — other contests in soccer and tennis also produced wins for local teams. - ➤ The Hillsboro Hops scored a deciding run in the eighth inning — a two-out RBI single by J.J. D’Orazio gave them a 4-3 win over the Spokane Indians, who lost their third straight one-run game on Saturday at Hillsboro Ballpark.
