COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hundreds of youth from across the Inland and Pacific Northwest will compete at the 90th annual Junior Livestock Show at Spokane County Fair and Expo Center from April 30 to May 3. The show will begin with an opening ceremony on April 29 at 6:30 p.m., include livestock competitions and an awards presentation on May 2, and feature a local meat sale on May 3 — attendance is free.  KXLY

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Spokane ranked 43rd among 182 U.S. cities for affordable rent, according to a WalletHub study released April 20. The study compared median annual gross rent to household income and showed Spokane was cheaper than Orlando, Los Angeles, Cleveland, New York, Eugene, Philadelphia, Dallas and Kansas City — but costlier than Charleston, Anchorage, Seattle, Billings, Boise and Missoula.  FOX 28 Spokane

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Cheney High School now have renovated locker rooms available before hitting the fields this spring — the upgrade, funded by a $72 million bond passed by voters in November, includes new lockers, extra storage, LED lighting and a redesigned floor plan for team huddles.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City and regional leaders introduced a five-year plan on April 14 to end homelessness in Spokane by 2030—presented to the Urban Experience Committee and developed with local governments and service providers. The plan focuses on expanding housing options, improving outreach to unsheltered people, and reducing barriers, with Spokane, Spokane County and Spokane Valley all involved in ongoing reviews.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • City and regional leaders unveiled a five-year plan on April 14 to reduce homelessness in Spokane by 2030—this plan sets out five key objectives, including expanding safe housing and support programs with regular data reviews. The strategy was developed by the Spokane Regional Continuum of Care in collaboration with local governments and service providers.  KHQ
