CRIME NEWS

  • A 26-year-old Spokane man was sentenced to nine years in prison and four years of supervised release for trafficking fentanyl-laced pills and methamphetamine in the Tri-Cities area—DEA controlled purchases in late 2023 uncovered armed transactions and a child's bag of pills in his home.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane City Council approved the Ban the Address initiative that stops employers from rejecting job applicants without a physical address — a measure aimed at protecting homeless job seekers. The ordinance now goes to Mayor Lisa Brown, who will decide if it becomes law 30 days later.  KHQ
  • Sheriff John Nowels is seeking a 5.6% salary raise to fix pay differences as he earns about 90% of what the county prosecutor makes — Spokane County Commissioners will vote on his request soon.  KHQ
  • Voters in two Spokane County districts will vote today in a special election that includes two ballot measures—one to approve a $6.2 million bond for replacing aging school facilities in Orchard Prairie School District and one to restore the EMS property tax levy for Fire District No.8, which would cost a home valued at $400,000 about $200 annually.   • Tekoa native Susannah Scaroni clinched her second Boston Marathon win in the women's wheelchair division with a time of 1:35:20 and maintained a 3:39 pace per mile. She returned after missing the 2024 race due to injury — she also holds five Spokane wheelchair race titles and is a three-time Paralympian.  KHQ
  • Tekoa native Susannah Scaroni won the women’s wheelchair division at the 129th Boston Marathon on Monday in 1 hour, 35 minutes and 25 seconds, finishing over two minutes ahead of Swiss rivals Catherine Debrunner and Manuela Schar. The six-time Paralympian earned her second consecutive title after skipping the 2024 race and winning in Boston in 2023—joining four other Americans with multiple wins.  The Spokesman-Review
