COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spokane Public Library will host a night of painting, music and community connection this Saturday from 6 to 10 p.m. at the downtown Central branch, where local artists will perform and Refugee and Immigrant Connections Spokane representatives will share resources (Hope in the Community event).  The Spokesman-Review
  • The Becca Program at the local Juvenile Justice Center lost 70% of its funding last year and now struggles to support at-risk teens, though new state funding of $5 million will ease the shortfall next year. Officials worry that without long-term guarantees, critical services may suffer again.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Ten local nonprofits lost over $175,000 in donations when Flipcause filed for bankruptcy and withheld funds meant for community programs. Groups such as Shadle Park Boosters and DS Connections are now cutting services — some events may require fees as they work to recoup the lost money.  The Spokesman-Review

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local artist Danielle Davis designed a decorative crosswalk at Comstock and Lincoln in Comstock Park as part of the Asphalt Arts pilot program. The crosswalk was installed yesterday—using traffic calming funds—and helps slow traffic.  FOX 28 Spokane

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Spokane Scholars Foundation celebrated 165 seniors for their achievements in English, fine arts, math, science, social studies, and world languages, awarding prizes from $5,000 to $1,000 (including local high school winners). The event recognized outstanding academic excellence among future leaders.  The Spokesman-Review
  • On Tuesday at CenterPlace Regional Event Center, the Greater Spokane League honored scholar-athlete award winners from 17 schools and celebrated longtime member Herb Rotchford along with retired athletic directors for their many years of service in Spokane sports.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The Nine Mile District is proposing a levy to fund repairs and upgrades at local schools. The board said the funds will help update aging facilities and improve safety for students.  KXLY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Air Force will expand PFAS drinking water testing by installing in-home filters at Fairchild AFB this fall to address contamination for West Plains residents plus maintain community input and plan long-term cleanup.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ALERT Spokane launched by emergency management uses Regroup Mass Notification technology to send alerts during emergencies. Residents need to re-register online as the county tests the system over the next 10 days (test alerts note they are tests).  FOX 28 Spokane

SPORTS NEWS

  • Egypt’s national team has chosen Spokane as its base camp for World Cup training this summer, plus Mohamed Salah will lead sessions at Gonzaga University ahead of group stage matches in Seattle.  Spokane Public Radio
  • Gonzaga guard Adam Miller entered the transfer portal Tuesday as he sought an extra season and may need a waiver after playing five seasons at several schools. He joins six other Gonzaga players who recently made the transfer decision.  The Spokesman-Review
