Good morning, Spokane Valley. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 23rd of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Registration is open for summer swim lessons and swim team practice at Park Road, Valley Mission and Terrance View Pools. Lessons cost $48 per two‑week session starting June 30 and team registration costs $75 for swimmers aged 7 to 18 who must be able to swim a full pool length—classes are offered in morning and afternoon sessions—team meets are held Thursday evenings starting in July.  KXLY
  • Larry Barringer, a longtime volunteer and co-founder of Neighbors Feeding Neighbors, was honored earlier this month with the Washington State Volunteer Service Award by Serve Washington — recognizing his dedication to feeding those in need. He has continued to serve hot meals and deliver thousands of pounds of food to local banks despite challenges like a stolen trailer — a setback overcome with strong community support.  KXLY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Lucky Bistro opened last month in Spokane Valley at the site of the former Casual Friday Donuts on Sullivan as owners Tony Strand and Steve Jones sought a coffee shop that stays open for meetings using a drive-thru—very convenient—for quick stops. The Irish-themed bistro serves artisan Indaba coffee and treats like the sweet Lucky Charm—which mixes white chocolate, toasted marshmallow, and Irish cream—and will later offer beer and wine with extended hours.  The Spokesman-Review

CRIME NEWS

  • In Spokane Valley, Teri Suiter attacked her adult daughter and mother unprovoked in a home near East Boone Avenue and North Vista Road Monday afternoon—deputies used a stun gun to disarm her and set a $500,000 bond—while the injured grandmother was hospitalized in critical condition.  KXLY
  • Spokane Valley deputies responded around 3:40 p.m. on Monday in the East Boone and North Vista Road area after 43-year-old Teri Suiter threatened self-harm with a knife during a family dispute, and they disarmed her with a Taser—two family members suffering serious stab wounds were taken to hospital and are expected to survive while Suiter faces charges for first-degree assault.  The Spokesman-Review

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Spokane River Forum teaches local residents how to join in long-term conservation of the environment—offering practical ways to get involved on Earth Day.  KHQ
  • Spokane County officials reported that residents generated over 340,000 pounds of trash in 2024 with each person contributing about 1,500 pounds, and they urge everyone to reduce, reuse, and recycle properly — for example, sorting recyclables without bagging them. A Spokane River Forum will bring business owners, nonprofit leaders, tribal representatives, and government officials together to share ideas on protecting water quality and restoring habitats.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Bob Ferguson signed a new law Tuesday — a bipartisan measure sponsored by Sen. Marcus Riccelli — that prevents collection agencies from reporting medical debt and hurting credit scores.
