COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spokane County held a ribbon-cutting on Wednesday for the renewed Plantes Ferry Sports Complex in Spokane Valley, which now features upgraded artificial turf, expanded parking, and LED field lights that limit light spill to give local youth a safer place to play.  The Spokesman-Review

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Spokane International Airport now offers three new local dining spots as Meltz Extreme Grilled Cheese (opened near the C gates in early March), Thomas Hammer Coffee (in the A+B concourses a month later), and Method Juice Cafe (opened last week) join a plan to give travelers a taste of Spokane.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Travelers at Spokane International Airport now have three new local dining options after Meltz Extreme Grilled Cheese opened in early March, followed by Thomas Hammer Coffee and Method Juice Cafe. The initiative led by SSP America adds local flavor for visitors.  KXLY

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Wednesday, AAA reported that gas prices nearly hit a record high of $5.53 per gallon across Washington, and local stations in Spokane Valley may face higher fuel costs today.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Central Valley School Board approved a shift in boundaries that will reassign over 100 Opportunity Elementary students to nearby schools to balance class sizes. Families may choose to keep their children at Opportunity until middle school – most new zones fall within a 1-mile walk.  The Spokesman-Review

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A crew from Northern Columbia Reforestation began thinning small trees and branches in River Run on Monday, April 27 to lower wildfire risk near Spokane Falls Community College. The project, the first of its kind on privately owned shoreline property, follows a state-approved plan & covers roughly 10 acres.  The Inlander

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The statue of John Monaghan was removed this morning from downtown Spokane after standing 120 years, as City Council paid $88,000 to move it to Fairmount Memorial Park — a less prominent spot addressing concerns over its controversial plaque. Council says the move will help downtown feel more welcoming.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane Valley City Council approved a land lease for a new ice rink with a six to one vote Tuesday night, and work will begin once the permit is approved. Contractors will start leveling the site along Sullivan with building and infrastructure upgrades planned — minimal traffic disruption.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Massamba Diop transferred to Gonzaga, a move announced Tuesday at 5 p.m., and his 7-foot-1 height, rim protection, and scoring ability from his freshman season in Tempe is expected to boost the Zags’ inside performance as they plan for the season.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Jackson Cox struck out nine in six innings of relief as the Indians lost 3-1 to the Emeralds at PK Park on Wednesday. The series continues Thursday at 6:35 p.m. as the club aims to improve its offense.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Former WSU lineman Brock Dieu signed with the Seahawks, marking a key step in his NFL career as reported by local media.  KXLY
