COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Silver Star Banner Day honored past service as two local veterans in Spokane Valley shared their stories—Carrillo, who earned a Bronze Star after a 2007 Iraq combat mission and still faces unseen injuries, and Carroll, who nearly died during a 2003 deployment and now connects veterans with needed resources. Both veterans urged the community to thank service members and recognize the real cost of freedom.  KHQ

CRIME NEWS

  • Spokane County Sheriff’s Office & SCIU detectives arrested convicted felons Bradley J. Luiten and Dominick W. Huey after a burglary reported on April 27th led them to a residence along N. Crescent Road and in Medical Lake, recovering stolen firearms and property that the suspects planned to sell illegally.  Spokane County

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washington lawmakers are considering a 70% funding cut to the Becca program that supports vulnerable youth in Spokane, a move that would drop annual funding from $1.3 million to under $400,000 — a change the Spokane County Juvenile Center warns will significantly reduce essential services. Advocates say the program is a vital resource for about 1,500 cases a year.  KXLY
  • Spokane launched the HOME initiative to help residents who risk living in cars or on the streets by offering health care, outreach, and economic support. Mayor Lisa Brown said City-Wide Ordinance 3 will guide city agencies and churches to offer help and reduce unauthorized camping — uniting efforts from all parts of the community.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Spokane astronaut Anne McClain led the first all-female spacewalk on May 1st at the International Space Station with Nicole Ayer as they worked on station maintenance—marking a historic milestone in NASA’s efforts. HEALTH NEWS

  • Spokane woman Heather Gant saved 13-year-old Derick, who suffered a heart attack near Shadle Park last week, by performing CPR after spotting him in a crosswalk—quick action that helped him receive emergency care. Doctors continue to investigate his sudden cardiac event as both families urge the community to take CPR classes.  KXLY

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Spokane Chiefs defeated the Portland Winterhawks 6 to 4 when Owen Martin scored the winning goal with just over three minutes left at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Chiefs advanced to the WHL championship to face the Medicine Hat Tigers after sweeping the Western Conference championship+ it marks their first finals appearance since 2008 when they won the Memorial Cup.  The Spokesman-Review
