Highland Park United Methodist Church's Japanese congregation (with roots dating to 1901) has grown from small meetings to a modern church built on Garfield Street and Hartson Avenue in 1958, marking 125 years of community heritage.
Poet laureate Derek Sheffield will lead a members-only hike at Dishman Hills Conservancy on Thursday at 10 a.m. and hold a poetry reading at Spokane Valley Library at 6:30 p.m.; nearby, professor Alec Schumacher is shortlisted for the Griffin Poetry Prize.
A local homeowner in Browne’s Addition hosted a secret house concert by The All-American Rejects on Friday night as part of their House Party Tour.
The show drew 500 indoor attendees + 1,000 fans outside and featured a live proposal on stage.

On May 3 at 8:30 p.m. in Spokane (with 43,670 runners) the annual 7.46-mile Bloomsday race marked its 50th anniversary.
Friends and family (using motivational signs) cheered runners along the course.
Over 43,000 runners joined Spokane’s Bloomsday race on Sunday when Kasandra Parker and Reid Buchanan made history as elite winners; 43,670 participants raced a 12-km course through downtown and over Doomsday Hill + drawing community runners and top athletes from across the region.
