COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Brenton Sconce bear-crawled the Bloomsday course starting on Sunday at 10 a.m. and finished nearly 24 hours later—accompanied by his young son and cheers—to raise addiction recovery awareness as local supporters greeted him with balloons and confetti.  FOX 28 Spokane

CULTURE NEWS

  • Norwegian director André Øvredal filmed a new horror movie entirely in Washington that will hit theaters on May 22. Passenger uses the state’s many landscapes—ranging from desert to jungle—for a van life adventure story.  KHQ
  • The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture earned unconditional reaccreditation yesterday after an 18-month review (a distinction shared by only 1,100 museums nationwide). The reaccreditation boosts the museum’s ability to secure major grants and world-class traveling exhibitions, with status valid through 2036.  FOX 28 Spokane

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA reports that gas prices in Spokane County have hit an all-time high, leading drivers to use apps or rewards programs or even cross into Idaho for cheaper fuel — many locals hope the rates drop soon.  FOX 28 Spokane

FINANCE NEWS

  • On Monday, May 4, expert Barin Saxton from Canopy Credit Union advised that adding fixed extra dollars to monthly debt payments and targeting high-interest credit cards can significantly shorten repayment times—warning against debt settlement traps and recommending free financial guidance from local banks.  FOX 28 Spokane

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Flags were lowered to half-staff on May 4 to honor National Firefighters Memorial Day, commemorating firefighters such as Chief Frank Harwood (killed in an ambush on Canfield Mountain in June 2025) and Battalion Chief John Morrison. The mayor encouraged the community to pause for a moment of silence at noon.  KHQ
  • On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review a case filed by Spokane native John Stockton against Washington for sanctioning doctors over COVID-19 vaccine policies, following dismissals & appeals that determined there was no direct injury.  FOX 28 Spokane

HEALTH NEWS

  • Spokane West Plains residents who use private wells will receive water filters and guidance on point-of-entry treatment at an open house on Saturday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Waste to Energy Plant (2900 S. Geiger Blvd).  KHQ

  • At Sunday's Bloomsday race, a delay at the starting line left some participants frustrated, with one family (including a 5-month-old) ending their race early, and organizers planning a Thursday meeting to review start line procedures.  The Spokesman-Review
