CRIME NEWS

  • Spokane Valley Deputies responded on May 7th at 9:50 a.m. near N. Conklin Road and E. Sprague Avenue to a call about an armed man who intervened in a violent assault on a woman—he confronted suspect William C. Morris, who fled in a stolen Kia after the good Samaritan fired a shot that hit the driver's side tire, and officers later detained Morris.  Spokane County
  • Spokane Valley Major Crime Detectives investigated the suspicious death of a man found inside a parked motorhome on the 6500 block of East Broadway Avenue on Tuesday (with deputies, forensic experts and a K9 unit processing the scene) to determine the cause.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Today a good Samaritan in Spokane Valley intervened in a violent assault when he stopped a suspect attacking a woman near N. Conklin Rd. and E. Sprague Ave by blocking the suspect's stolen vehicle and firing at its tire, and the suspect was later booked on charges including robbery and possession of a stolen vehicle while the woman was not seriously injured.  KHQ
  • On May 7, 2025, a suspicious fire broke out in Spokane’s Northtown area around 12:30 p.m., damaging several structures when a brush fire spread from a back alley and prompting investigators to search for a light blue or silver Audi A4 with a damaged rear bumper and mismatched wheels—tips were urged to be shared with Crime Check.  FOX 28 Spokane

EDUCATION NEWS

  • KSPS PBS cancelled its free summer camps for families in the Inland Northwest after federal funding cuts ended grants for the Ready to Learn initiative; the station will still offer free educational programming on TV & online.  KXLY
  • Gonzaga University is investing almost $3 million to upgrade lab spaces at its Integrated STEM Complex in Spokane—demolition has begun on the Bollier Center and the Herak Center to build modern labs for biomedical science, materials research, and informatics. The projects are expected to finish by the start of the next academic year.  Spokane Journal of Business

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Bob Ferguson signed new housing laws on Wednesday that cap yearly rent increases at 7% plus inflation or 10%—a measure to help control rising rents. The law exempts new construction for 12 years and cuts building delays—steps aimed to ease the state’s homelessness crisis.  The Spokesman-Review

HEALTH NEWS

  • A study found that girls who eat more inflammatory foods were 15% more likely to start their period in a month while a healthier diet lowered the risk by 8%—the research tracked over 7,500 children ages 9 to 14 and showed diet matters even when body size is considered.  FOX 28 Spokane
