COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Thursday evening, the Spokane Canoe and Kayak Club hosted its annual paddle season kickoff at Mirabeau Meadows Pavilion in Spokane Valley from 6 to 8 p.m. The free event welcomed paddlers of all levels to meet local experts and learn paddling tips, with a gear swap set for May 16.  KXLY
  • On May 7, Habitat for Humanity Spokane received $6.5 million in state funds to support local housing projects, while the Washington exchange lost customers as tax credits expired — author Adriana Janovich introduced ‘Secret Spokane’ highlighting eerie local sites.  Spokane Public Radio

CULTURE NEWS

  • MAC's 34th annual Mother's Day Home Tour is scheduled for Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. in Browne's Addition, where families will explore three historic mansions (built in 1889) with guided and self-guided tours hosted by the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • MAC will host its annual Mother's Day tours Sunday, May 10 at its Spokane Valley location (guiding families through exhibits that honor moms). The event will offer special insights into local art and history.  KXLY

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices are changing as U.S.-Iran talks affect supply. Petroleum expert Patrick De Haan from GasBuddy said new API numbers show an 8.1 million barrel draw and that rising fuel costs are causing air travel fares to increase.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Spokane Police Department is partnering with the Spokane Regional Health District and the FBI on an internet safety campaign for children and is inviting local parents (of children ages 5 to 18) to share feedback in focus groups. These sessions will be held in late May and early June, with participants receiving a $25 gift card.  KHQ
  • A cybersecurity breach on Canvas affected local colleges including Gonzaga and Eastern Washington; Instructure confirmed the incident last Friday (May 1) and the hacking group Shiny Hunters claims to have accessed student communications while sensitive info remains secure.  KXLY
  • Canvas, a tool used by local colleges including Gonzaga and Eastern Washington University, experienced a cybersecurity breach last Friday when a hacking group claimed access to messages and threatened to release data if demands are not met — Eastern Washington University said exposed data did not include sensitive information.  FOX 28 Spokane

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Monday, Meadowlane Road on the west side of US 195 will close for 30 days due to a traffic safety project. Drivers heading to Eagle Ridge must reroute via Cheney-Spokane Road — Cedar Road; added lanes and a new sidewalk will be installed with work wrapping up mid-to-late July.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Gonzaga is heading to Las Vegas for the revised 16-team Players Era bracket tournament this November with four guaranteed games against high-major opponents during Thanksgiving week. The event now features ESPN as the broadcast partner — replacing TNT — along with updated rules and a split bracket format.  The Spokesman-Review
