  • Spokane Valley Fire Department Station 3 rescued ducklings trapped in a sewer drain and reunited them with their family over Mother's Day weekend in Liberty Lake — a quick act that shows local care for wildlife.  KHQ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local banking history is shown by the Lincoln Building, which began when the Lindsay family opened National Saving and Loan during the Depression, later adding First Federal Savings and Loan. The bank merged + renamed before its assets moved to JPMorgan Chase after Washington Mutual collapsed.  The Spokesman-Review

CRIME NEWS

  • Community members gathered today at Franklin Park to honor hit-and-run victim Justin LaBrie in a candlelight vigil.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ferris High School debate team qualified for NCFL Nationals when coach Dan Sjolund (with 23 years of service) paid for 25 student tickets using his personal credit card, ensuring that nine qualifiers and 16 supporters can travel to compete.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Gonzaga University held the Class of 2026 graduation on Sunday as over 2,000 students completed their degree programs, including more than 1,200 undergrads, nearly 600 graduate students, and about 200 law students.  KXLY
  • Over 2,000 students, including undergrad, graduate, and law students, celebrated graduation at Gonzaga University on Sunday, May 10. The Class of 2026 marked years of academic effort with a memorable ceremony - a milestone for the community.  FOX 28 Spokane

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting today, drivers using Meadowlane Road on the west side of US 195 must follow a detour via Cheney-Spokane Road, Cedar Road, and Eagle Ridge Boulevard as construction installs a J-turn to improve safety and reduce congestion. The closure will last about 30 days and is set to finish by mid to late July.  FOX 28 Spokane

  • Habitat for Humanity has secured $6.5M in state funding to support housing for low-income and first-time home buyers in Spokane, Spokane Valley (with a planned infill project) and Airway Heights, with funds covering infrastructure, building costs, and down payment assistance.  Spokane Public Radio

SPORTS NEWS

  • Teams must register for Hoopfest 2026 by Sunday, May 17 as the largest three-on-three basketball tournament draws over 20,000 players. The event will take place on June 27 and June 28 in downtown Spokane.  FOX 28 Spokane
