COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Emerson-Garfield are invited to drop off household junk, yard waste and metal recycling at Faith Bible Church (600 W. Cora) on May 17 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. They must show a photo ID or utility bill to prove residency, and items like paint, concrete or toxic waste will not be accepted.  KXLY
  • A Spokane mother who lost her 24-year-old son to a fentanyl overdose launched Gabriels Challenge on Mother's Day to fight the drug crisis—nearly 400 people attended the kickoff event. The initiative will hold its first mapping meeting Tuesday at Spokane City Hall where Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels will present fentanyl trend data and discuss available resources.  KXLY
  • Bear Lake Regional Park is reopening today at 11:00 a.m. and it will feature new pavement, landscaping, upgraded restrooms and showers, along with picnic shelters and docks to improve the visitor experience.  KHQ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • In 2024, eight recreational drownings occurred in Spokane County—seven along the Spokane River and one in Clear Lake—as officials warned that intoxication and cold water contributed to the preventable deaths.  KXLY
  • A crash is blocking the left lane on westbound I-90 near Grove Road—causing delays for drivers with no injuries reported.  KXLY

CRIME NEWS

  • Spokane police responded to a double homicide at Hart Terrace apartments Tuesday evening—reports showed a man with a knife, gunshots, and a fight that left two people dead—and arrested one suspect while asking the public to avoid the area.  KHQ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Air Supply will play on June 6 at Spokane Tribe Resort and Casino as part of their 50th anniversary tour & they are set to release their 18th studio album while planning a biopic and Broadway musical.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Supreme Court will review a birthright citizenship case tomorrow — a decision that could affect children of undocumented parents — and a draft report on pumped storage hydropower offers ways to lessen harm. Governor Ferguson signed over 40 bills on issues like bail bonds and driver safety while the Spokane Council voted to move a controversial Navy Ensign John Monaghan statue to private property and ban some right turns on red lights to improve pedestrian safety.  Spokane Public Radio
  • Local organizations support a proposed ordinance before Spokane City Council that would let parts of public parks be set as private to keep immigrants and refugees safe. The ordinance, scheduled for its first reading on (May 26), must be approved by the Spokane Park Board before it becomes city code.  KXLY
