COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Catholic Charities of Eastern Washington has proposed a $20 million project to rehabilitate 158 affordable housing units near Upriver Drive, including 122 units at the El Estero Apartments, with renovations scheduled to begin in September while residents stay on site. Cougar Crest Winery Estate is preparing to reopen at 830 W. Sprague Ave with an expanded tasting room and new menu items—while a drive-through burger restaurant is set to open later this year on North Division.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Today at 7 p.m., Spokane will host the 87th Armed Forces Torchlight Parade — military personnel will display a torchlight show as part of a long-standing tradition.  KHQ
  • A free microchip clinic took place at Balfour Park on May 17—launched in partnership between the city and STAHR, short for Short Term After Hours Rescue, to help reunite pets with their owners.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Spokane Public Library will host its free Summer Reading Club from June 1 to August 31 to invite kids and adults to join fun events such as escape rooms, Storytimes, and coding camps. Participants who read 15 days each month will earn prizes—kids may win free books, USL soccer tickets, or an ice cream treat while adults can score a free book and entries for rewards like Spokane Symphony tickets or a YMCA membership.  KXLY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Pediatricians from Johns Hopkins Medicine advise families to use sunscreen every two hours, keep kids five feet from hot grills, wear helmets when riding bikes, and use bug spray to avoid bites and dehydration this summer. They also recommend switching from metal grill brushes to reduce the risk of dislodged wires – a step to help keep children safe while playing outdoors.  KXLY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Friday, Mt. Spokane won the 3A District 6 softball title as Addi Jay threw a no-hitter with 18 strikeouts to beat Hermiston 9 to 0 and the Wildcats will play in state next weekend in Lacey. In district track events, athletes from Mead, Mt. Spokane and other schools set personal records and won key events (for example, Simon Rosselli threw the discus 183 feet and Kaden Hooper won the long jump).  The Spokesman-Review
