Judges awarded honors for float design and 24 marching bands at the Lilac Festival Armed Forces Torchlight Parade on Saturday evening — showcasing talent from local schools and towns.

Parade Director Dave Weatherred said the awards signaled strong efforts by both smaller towns and larger schools.

The Spokane Lilac Festival announced winners of the Armed Forces Torchlight Parade held Saturday, naming Ritzville, Freeman, Deer Park, and Wenatchee as top honorees.

Local schools also earned Lilac Gold Standard Awards during the event.

Officials from the Department of Ecology are expanding PFAS testing in the West Plains after providing clean water solutions to affected households.

They will hold a public meeting on June 16 at 6 p.m. at the Shriners Event Center to review the interim plan & receive public input.

Spokane County will ask West Plains property owners to vote in August on a ballot measure adding a $15 to $30 fee for water use—funding a new aquifer protection area.

The funding will support studies on PFAS and development impacts and mirrors a 40-year program for groundwater protection.

Washington State Park’s Discover Pass price increased by $15 to support park upkeep — the first hike in 15 years.

The Legislature approved the change last April and Governor Ferguson signed it in May.

Local runner Shelle Goforth marked her 50th half marathon at the Windermere Marathon on May 17 as her family cheered her with signs and balloons and the race supported Spokane Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) as its charity partner.
