COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Friday, dog owners gathered at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center for an AKC Fast CAT test where dogs raced 100 yards chasing a white lure. The event continues through Monday — featuring dogs of all sizes with times ranging from 7 to 11 seconds — and offers free admission with parking fees.  The Spokesman-Review

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Spokane firefighters rescued two people trapped by smoke from an apartment fire at Sky View Apartments on 5th Avenue near Cedar Street around 12:45 p.m. Thursday when a stovetop left on with combustible materials sparked the blaze in a renovated unit and filled hallways with smoke—firefighters contained the fire to that unit and confirmed no one was injured or displaced.  KXLY

CRIME NEWS

  • On May 22 at around 1:35 a.m., Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies pursued 32-year-old Damon J. Smith after he trespassed and ignored multiple warnings, and when he fled between business lots and hid under a truck, K9 Bo quickly located him—he was arrested on charges including burglary 2nd degree, resisting arrest, obstructing and an active warrant for cyber stalking.  Spokane County
  • According to the FTC website, victims lost over 38 million dollars in Q1 due to government imposter scams—scammers who demanded immediate payment using unusual methods—and one victim lost $4,000 after receiving a fake summons.  Spokane County

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Spokane International Airport expects record travel this summer as an 18% increase in travelers this Memorial Day weekend is driven by lower gas prices—officials advise passengers to arrive early to cope with longer wait times at checkpoints amid heavier highway traffic.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane, Spokane Valley, and Spokane County renewed an interlocal agreement to improve how they address homelessness by sharing data, holding regular coordination meetings, and ensuring a coordinated response during severe weather + distributing grant funds. Local officials say the deal builds on past efforts to better serve those experiencing homelessness.  Spokane Journal of Business
  • Washington health officials warned that planned Medicaid cuts hurt patients and care providers while ICE arrested several people at immigration court—raising concerns that immigrants might skip hearings.   • The Washington State Department of Transportation advises travelers to check tire pressure, gas, and pack a spare tire, phone charger, and non-perishable food before traveling this Memorial Day weekend.   • Local Boulevard Race unveiled its 2025 poster created by local artist Art Mercz—featuring Spokane's iconic Gateway Bridge along its four-mile route—and will hold the race on Sunday, Sept. 21 where runners and walkers pay $30 to register and receive a grocery coupon from Rosauers and a race shirt while DJs and cheer zones create excitement for the Community Cancer Fund.  KHQ
