- ➤ During Memorial Day weekend, the Washington State Fallen Heroes Project held its annual Boots on the Ground tribute at Veteran Memorial Arena in Spokane—boots worn by fallen soldiers with an American flag and picture were placed near the Illuminating Courage statue. A flag change ceremony took place Saturday evening and the display will be available for viewing through tomorrow. FOX 28 Spokane
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A driver crashed into a Burlington store in Spokane’s Nevada Heights neighborhood on Sunday morning after suffering a medical emergency near 5630 North Division Street next to Trader Joe’s—fire officials said the store was empty during its remodeling while the driver was taken to a local hospital. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Spokane police are investigating a series of fires along High Drive on the south hill from Sunday night after witnesses reported an explosion before the flames appeared at 9:45 p.m.—firefighters quickly contained the fire—and a drone is being used to track the suspected arsonist. KXLY
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Siemers Farm in Green Bluff hosted a Civil War battle reenactment over Memorial Day weekend and the event continues today as Union and Confederate soldiers engage in a 30-minute skirmish with rifle, pistol and cannon fire that left about 30 simulated casualties—showing detailed historical training. - ➤ Governor Bob Ferguson vetoed about 55 spending items from the $78 billion state budget, cutting funds for programs that support foster youth, college students, seniors and immigrant services + an offshore wind study to save $22.3 million amid strict budget limits. Spokane Public Radio
- ➤ Feeding America reported that about 250,000 children in Washington face food insecurity this summer and the Sun Bucks program will offer extra EBT support to families on SNAP, free or reduced lunch, or low income — children aged eight through 18 in qualifying households will automatically receive benefits while others may apply through DSHS.
