COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Scale House Market opens today as Spokane Valley’s first year-round farmers market (4422 E. 8th Ave) with a grand opening from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and an indoor space open until 4 p.m.; the market will feature vendor stalls, a stage for live music, and a teaching kitchen. Market Director Brittany Tyler said the hub will offer local farmers and entrepreneurs a permanent space to sell goods and promote sustainable shopping.  KXLY

CRIME NEWS

  • Spokane police arrested a man on a burglary charge after a witness reported a door being kicked in on May 30—officers used a K9 unit and security footage to secure the arrest, and they are still searching for a second suspect.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • The government dismissed the fraud case against Dr. Werschler and his businesses on May 30 after forensic tests cleared him of wrongdoings connected to a COVID loan fund scheme where bookkeeper Carol Casilla embezzled over $1 million — Casilla pleaded guilty to wire fraud and received a two-year sentence — with a $1.4 million civil settlement reached to resolve further claims.  FOX 28 Spokane

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lungala Rubadiri came from Los Angeles for the 40th annual ArtFest at the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, where 75 artists show batik work, enamel jewelry and other creative pieces. The event is expected to draw 10,000 visitors and offers live music + food trucks + yard games, running from today until Sunday.  The Spokesman-Review

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Spokane County welcomed a record 10.1 million visitors last year who spent $1.53 billion on food, lodging, retail, transportation, and entertainment, with visitor numbers rising by 2.9% and spending up 2% over the previous year—bringing a total economic impact of $2.4 billion.  Spokane Journal of Business
