- ➤ Fire investigators said an apartment fire in Spokane was caused by combustible materials left on a stovetop that ignited when the stove was turned on and seriously injured the sleeping resident — a disabled smoke alarm delayed the warning. FOX 28 Spokane

- ➤ Discount retailer Five Below is planning a new store in Spokane Valley and has submitted a permit application for a $100,000 tenant-improvement project at the 12,200-square-foot former Party City store at 13806 E. Indiana in a shopping center west of Spokane Valley Mall (which also houses Staples and Total Wine & More). Spokane Journal of Business
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Spokane Public Schools is using a Walking School Bus program at Regal Elementary where volunteers and staff walk students to school daily, improving attendance. The program lowered severe chronic absences from 65 to 53 this school year — and officials plan to expand routes as more volunteers join. KHQ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Spokane City Council introduced an ordinance on Monday to ban crypto kiosks that scammers use to trick people into losing money—council members Paul Dillon and Betsy Wilkerson back the plan after law enforcement warned that these machines lead to severe financial losses and even suicides. - ➤ The Spokane City Council is considering a proposal to allocate $300,000 to Maddie's Place, a local nonprofit that helps babies born with drug exposure and their mothers. The council may vote on the plan as early as June 16, and the organization has seen rising demand after receiving $2 million to keep its doors open (it now also serves patients from across the state). - ➤ East Valley High School senior Verónica Garcia won her second state title in the girls’ 2A 400-meter dash at the track meet in Tacoma, finishing in 55.70 seconds while West Valley junior Lauren Matthew placed second at 56.75 seconds—Garcia said the support from her rivals pushed her to run faster.
