  • The NAACP Spokane Branch will host a Juneteenth celebration at Gonzaga University's Hemmingson Center on Thursday, June 19—featuring former Seahawks star Cliff Avril and musical guest Alethea Dumas. Community members can join a fireside chat about the meaning of Juneteenth as well as see Spokane’s first Miss Juneteenth and her court in attendance.  FOX 28 Spokane

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Rescuers from Fire District 9, Spokane Fire, and the sheriff's office are conducting a water rescue along the Little Spokane River near West Rudder Parkway just before 9:00 p.m. — two kayakers are unable to exit the water and may need medical attention for cold exposure.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ridgeline High School graduate Mackenzie Rosner overcame challenges like time in foster care and mental health issues before being adopted by her nurse aunt—she is now preparing for a nursing career with acceptance to Washington State University Honors College and plans to attend WSU College of Nursing in Spokane after completing her biomedical courses and EMT training. She has also demonstrated leadership on the track and field team and in school sports, serving as a role model for her peers.  The Spokesman-Review

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dozens of medical workers in downtown Spokane protested Tuesday afternoon after Representative Michael Baumgartner supported a federal spending bill that includes significant cuts to Medicaid and SNAP programs—protesters said the cuts could worsen local health care shortages.  KXLY
  • A new review published June 2 found that warning labels that stress health risks work better to discourage vaping than the current single nicotine addiction label—researchers compiled data from 24 studies with over 22,500 participants and suggested that the FDA adopt rotating warnings. The study showed that text-only labels can effectively inform users but may be missed when products are shared.  FOX 28 Spokane
