ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A woman was taken to the hospital after being hit by a car Saturday night in Spokane Valley in what police described as a potential hit-and-run—authorities are investigating the incident. A heat advisory is in effect from noon Monday to 9 PM PDT Tuesday with temperatures expected to reach between 91 and 101 degrees—residents are urged to stay cool and drink plenty of fluids.  KHQ
  • A garage fire near East Mansfield Avenue and North Pines Road sent a thick cloud of smoke over I-90 on Saturday after 12:30 p.m.—firefighters are investigating the damage and cause.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • A garage fire on Saturday afternoon in Spokane Valley sent a noticeable plume of smoke visible along I-90. A heat advisory will take effect from noon Monday to 9 PM Tuesday—temperatures are expected to reach 91 to 101 degrees and residents are advised to drink fluids, stay in cool areas, and check on neighbors.  KHQ
  • A 30-year-old woman was hit by a car Saturday night while crossing at North Argonne Road and East Knox Avenue in Spokane Valley—she was taken to a hospital by AMR as the suspect vehicle fled the scene.  FOX 28 Spokane

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jess Walter's novel So Far Gone will be released Tuesday by Harper Collins and follows Rhys Kinnick, a former environmental reporter who goes into isolation after a fight with his son-in-law—Walter will also discuss the story at the Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center on the same night.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Today, the annual Lilac City Comicon is underway at the Spokane Convention Center—offering unique art, comics, cosplay contests and games that let fans meet pop culture stars. The event, which began yesterday, will continue tomorrow from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.  FOX 28 Spokane

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washington will launch its WA Cares long-term care program next summer to help workers pay for care with benefits up to $36,500 for services such as home help and medicine. Lawmakers revised the program so that workers who leave their jobs may resume credit and test pilots in four counties— including Spokane—will help shape the plan before it goes statewide.  Spokane Public Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • Spokane County Fire District Nine in Mead hosted a demo day that taught kids and adults basic firefighting skills, and a heat advisory will affect Spokane Valley and nearby areas from noon Monday to 9 p.m. Tuesday — residents are urged to drink fluids, stay indoors, and check on neighbors to avoid heat-related illnesses.  KHQ
  • Federal health officials said a salmonella outbreak linked to recalled eggs sickened at least 79 people across seven states, including Washington, and 21 were hospitalized. The August Egg Company recalled 1.7 million brown organic and cage-free eggs from grocery stores between February and May—consumers are urged to dispose of recalled eggs and disinfect touched surfaces.  FOX 28 Spokane

SPORTS NEWS

  • Aidan Longwell, who missed 11 games due to a leg injury, returned as the designated hitter for the Spokane Indians on Friday and Saturday and helped end a three-game skid with a home run and RBI at Avista Stadium. The team beat the first-place Hillsboro Hops 15–8 and now trails only two games behind Hillsboro in the championship race — Longwell said he hopes to soon return to playing the field.  The Spokesman-Review
