CRIME NEWS

  • Quentin Hutchison, 18, pleaded not guilty in Spokane Superior Court today in connection with a shooting at the Maverick gas station on North Division, where he shot two men after questions about rival gang ties—court documents show one victim died and another was injured and his trial is set for August 4.  FOX 28 Spokane

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fifth grade students at a local school designed a new schoolyard + school officials will review the design before deciding on improvements.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane County Prosecuting Attorney Larry Haskell announced he will retire on July 18 after serving since 2014—Commissioners will appoint Acting Prosecutor Preston McCollam from a nominated list and hold an election in November to select his successor.  KXLY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Home insurance rates in Washington increased 19.5% over the past year, making it the third highest in the nation according to LendingTree's report. A heat advisory is in effect until 9 PM PDT today with temperatures expected to reach between 91 and 101 degrees in many areas including Spokane Valley (residents are urged to stay indoors and keep hydrated).  KHQ
  • BowFlex recalled over 3.8 million adjustable dumbbells after more than 100 injuries—including broken toes and concussions—were reported, with the recall starting Tuesday, June 10th. Johnson Health Tech Trading and BowFlex said customers who purchased the units may be eligible for a refund, replacement, or prorated voucher with a free one-year digital fitness membership.  FOX 28 Spokane

  • The annual Spokane Youth Sports Awards honored top high school athletes and coaches from Eastern Washington at the Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox despite a warm red carpet event known as the Spokane ESPYs.
