A $25M donation from the Franke family will cover half of UW School of Medicine tuition for 30 WWAMI students who commit to serving rural and Indigenous communities (including Spokane).
The largest known family gift for rural medical education was announced June 3.
RWC Group has coordinated a grant program that provided 37 electric school buses to Eastern Washington school districts, including West Valley.
These buses, in use since May 2025, offer lower operating costs and quieter rides, though diesel buses remain for longer routes and colder weather (affecting battery range).

Yearlong dry conditions have set up an unusually active fire season in Eastern Washington through September.
Firefighters are prepositioned and the DNR (Department of Natural Resources) advises residents to clear brush and review evacuation plans as warmer weather makes fires more likely.
