CRIME NEWS

  • Ten people were arrested in downtown Spokane on charges of failure to disperse—River Park Square was evacuated amid the commotion—and officials confirmed no curfew was set before the incident.  KHQ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Seattle writer Gina Tarnacki will sign her new book '100 Things to Do in Washington State Before You Die' at Auntie's Bookstore on July 12—her guide gives ideas for places to visit in Spokane and around the state—and she traveled across Washington to collect local tips.  The Spokesman-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • West Valley High School Spanish teacher Matthew Mastronardi lost his job after a video showed him reading a passage from To Kill a Mockingbird that contained the N-word. He said he wanted to spark discussion and plans to appeal the decision at a meeting on June 25.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Lisa Brown released a statement on Pride weekend yesterday at 8:30 a.m., urging everyone to celebrate safely and joyfully. She said Pride started as a protest—showing the need for equal rights and free speech—and noted that this year’s Spokane Pride event is planned to be safe and welcoming.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Local business groups led by the Downtown Spokane Partnership asked the Spokane City Council to allow officers to act swiftly in a downtown hospitality zone so that police can immediately remove homeless individuals near storefronts—this request comes ahead of a vote on homelessness law reforms scheduled for Monday. The letter, signed by 30 associations and numerous downtown professionals, argued that the current seven-day notice period delays needed actions to keep public areas safe.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Former Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers has been spending time with her family in Spokane after a 20-year congressional career and is set to lead her new non-profit—the Cathy McMorris Rodgers Leadership Institute—to mentor high school and college students. She said her effort was inspired by former House Speaker Paul Ryan’s own organization and reflects her commitment to traditional values.  Spokane Public Radio

  • Spokane now has 21 breweries with tasting rooms offering craft beers from summer lagers to creative IPAs and nonalcoholic options. The list highlights unique local venues including a Spokane Valley brew pub, a riverfront location, and spots with outdoor patios—showing the city's evolving craft-beer scene.  The Spokesman-Review

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Developers have submitted pre-development plans for Broadway Apartments near Kendall Yards at 1505 W. Broadway Ave. with either a four-story design for 38 units or a five-story design for 53 units—Tiny Tiki bar will move to 319 W. 2nd Ave. in July to offer more seating and events. Plans to tear down and rebuild Shadle Park McDonald’s at 2211 W. Wellesley Ave. have been shared with city officials with an estimated cost of $4.2 million—the new build will not include an indoor play area.  The Spokesman-Review
