COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 40 Spokane sites will offer summer meals for children aged 18 or younger starting Monday—parents must bring their own lunch as they cannot eat the free meals; the federally funded program will help ensure nutrition when school is out.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Spokane officials are advancing the design phase for Meadowglen Park in the North Indian Trail neighborhood to improve park access as rapid local growth drives development. The project is 60% complete and will include a playground, walking and biking paths, sports courts and a parking lot with a nearby bus stop at an estimated cost of $7.5 million to $8 million, with bidding to follow design completion in November and construction set to begin next year if a proposed levy passes.  Spokane Journal of Business

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Brentwood, Tennessee-based AMI Metals Inc. announced it will build a new 101,000-square-foot facility at 4024 N. Barker Road in Spokane Valley to nearly double its Inland Northwest operations. The city issued a permit this week and the project—valued at $9 million—will replace its leased 56,000-square-foot site, boost aluminum plate processing, and create local aerospace jobs.  Spokane Journal of Business
  • Spokane-based Peirone Produce plans a $20 million warehouse expansion at its West Plains facility at 9818 W. Hallett Road — a move to extend service to Washington’s West Side following URM Stores’ similar shift — with work set to begin in late July or early August and a projected sales boost of up to 50%.  Spokane Journal of Business

CRIME NEWS

  • A Spokane Valley deputy discovered a reported stolen 1989 Ford F350 flatbed during a trespassing call on Tuesday and arrested Nicki L. Bossard—who said she had borrowed the truck from a friend—for possessing a stolen motor vehicle after confirming the truck’s modified ignition and broken right window, with its owner later retrieving the vehicle.  KHQ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Pastor Amos Atkinson in Spokane emphasizes Juneteenth’s importance by noting it marks the day enslaved people in Galveston learned they were free on June 19. He says that the day honors African American history and calls for community unity—an effort echoed by a pastor from Galveston.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Multiple fires broke out in Spokane County over the last few days and Fire Chief Cody Rohrbach said Tuesday’s strong winds and dry grass—more like mid-July conditions—made fighting fires very hard. The National Weather Service introduced a new alert system for extreme fire danger and officials urged residents to clear space around homes to help prevent fire spread.  KXLY

  • The Spokane Jr. Chiefs Hockey Club announced Monday that Curtis “Mo” Morrison is its new Executive Director—bringing nearly two decades of youth and junior hockey experience from roles with the Atlanta Knights and Atlanta Fire Hockey Clubs.
