COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spokane County Firefighter Paul Leforgee retired after 29 years of service and was honored with a heartfelt Facebook video by Fire District 8—showing his work assisting people during emergencies and mentoring fellow firefighters.   • Washington State Parks will host an open house at Argonne Library in Spokane Valley tomorrow from 4 to 7 p.m. on future plans for Mount Spokane, where officials will present two long-term visions—one to upgrade trails and facilities and another to boost tourism—and seek public feedback.  FOX 28 Spokane

CULTURE NEWS

  • Throughout the summer, Commellini Estate Venue and Event Restaurant is hosting its Moonshine Artisan Night Market and Moonlit Movie series—free outdoor movie nights offering local food, live music and art. The events run on Wednesdays from June 4 to August 27 with movies beginning near 9 p.m.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Councilmember Lili Navarrete will leave her District 2 seat at the end of June and join the Community Health and Human Services team in mid-July—she said health concerns and long work hours led to her decision. The council began accepting applications on May 23 and will hold public interviews on July 10 with a vote scheduled for July 28 to choose her replacement.  Spokane Public Radio
  • Today, construction begins on a section of Wellesley Avenue next to East Valley High School to install new pavement, turn lanes, a stormwater system, traffic islands and crosswalks for better safety. Approved by City Council with a 6—1 vote, the project will cost less than $1.1 million and keep 80% of existing street parking while adjusting lanes at Tolford and Moore roads.  The Spokesman-Review

  • Spokane Regional Health District officials warned residents yesterday that warm weather is increasing tick activity on local trails, and they advised hikers and pet owners to take precautions by wearing protective clothing—using EPA-approved repellents and performing full tick checks—despite no recent rise in tick-related reports. They stressed that tick bites can lead to illnesses like Rocky Mountain spotted fever.  FOX 28 Spokane
