- ➤ On Friday morning, 32 volunteer basketball players started a 24-hour challenge at North Bank of Riverfront Park—raising funds for foster children as part of Hoopfest. The event ended Saturday morning and split the proceeds equally between foster care programs and partner charities—such as the YMCA and Special Olympics East Region. The Spokesman-Review
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Spokane County Prosecutor ruled that officers Brandon Roy and Andrew Willis were justified in using lethal force when they shot armed suspect Alan D. Jenks on March 31 near 1830 W. Dean Ave—Jenks fired his gun and resisted detention before he died, so no charges will be filed against the officers. KHQ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Spokane Transit Authority Board announced on June 27 that they are moving forward with Karl Otterstrom as a candidate for new chief executive officer following former CEO Susan Meyer’s retirement in December 2024 plus interviews on May 30. Next month, a public forum will let community members and employees share feedback with hiring firm KL2 Connects before a final decision is made. FOX 28 Spokane
- ➤ City facilities will lower flags to half-staff to honor former Secretary of State Ralph Munro following Gov. Bob Ferguson's order. Munro died on March 20 and will be honored with a memorial service today at 2 p.m. at the Capitol Legislative Building Rotunda. KHQ

- ➤ Hoopfest, an annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament, is taking over downtown as volunteers set up courts Friday night and take them down late Sunday afternoon—drawing thousands of players and fans.
