CRIME NEWS

  • A 13-year-old child named Simeon Wiens from Spokane was last seen leaving his hotel around 6:15 a.m. Friday and near Factorio Mall at 6:45 a.m.—police said he had no cell phone and a small amount of cash and are asking anyone with surveillance footage or information to call 911.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Six county schools face uncertainty for after-school and summer programs after federal grants are under review — Communities in Schools may lose $9 million in funding that supports student coordinators, activities, and critical programming if funds are not released; the grant currently provides $500,000 per school per year, putting low-income students at risk when programs potentially change after August.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Three candidates — a United States airman, a retired firefighter, and a software engineer — are running for a Cheney City Council seat to address water issues and spur local economic growth. Ballots will be mailed out on Wednesday and must be returned by Aug. 5 at 8 p.m., with voter registration closing on July 28.  The Spokesman-Review
  • After turning 18 on May 15, Ferris High student Dylan 'Alex' Alexander Saquic Lopez was taken by ICE from Spokane on May 29 when he attended what he thought was a routine check-in and was sent to Tacoma for deportation. His family and teachers are seeking bond so he can return home—an individual hearing is set for Sept. 3.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Cody Arguelles, a retired military survival instructor who will soon open a cigar lounge, is running for Spokane's Northwest District 3 seat against incumbent Zack Zappone. He said his concerns for his one-year-old son—such as hidden needles in park grass—drive his conservative campaign to improve public safety.  Spokane Public Radio
