CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday, the 33 Artists Market took place at the Pergola Event Center where emerging and established artists showcased works in watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastel and pen and ink — a project founded by local artist Gwyn Pevonka to give Spokane talent a chance to share their art.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • The ‘Tacos y Tequila’ Festival was postponed because organizers cited safety concerns amid rising hostility toward immigrants. The event was scheduled for August 23-24 to support Nuestras Raices’ campaign for a Latino Cultural and Behavioral Health Center — plans call for improved security for next year.  FOX 28 Spokane

  • Last summer, six Spokesman-Review interns were thrown right into tasks and did not spend time on routine work—many even saw their work on the front page on Day 1 as they built confidence in their skills. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Lake Spokane Fire burned 2,556 acres since July 19 and reached 38% containment, so officials lowered evacuations—areas under Level 3 are now in Level 2 and those in Level 2 in Level 1. Fire crews continue building fire lines and using aircraft to fight flare-ups—residents near Nine Mile Falls are advised to stay alert as they work on containment.  FOX 28 Spokane

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in Spokane Valley face a road closure as Pines Road will be fully closed today and Monday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. BNSF Railway crews will work on installing support structures for a rail bridge — detours along Mansfield, University, and Sullivan Roads offer alternate routes while local access remains available.  KHQ
  • Washington's population increased to 8.1 million last year after adding about 79,000 people–a slower pace than in 2010 with most new residents arriving from outside the state. Local counties such as Spokane continue to build housing with nearly 70 percent of new homes constructed as multi-family units.  FOX 28 Spokane
