COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A village of 30 tiny homes is set to be built on an empty plot in West Hills this Fall to house the homeless, but nearby residents and a sober living community worry the project may hurt the neighborhood. City Councilman Johnathan Bingle and Waters Meet Foundation say the location is cost-effective and near public transit and urge more community discussion.  FOX 28 Spokane

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city of Spokane launched a new website that helps immigrant and refugee communities learn about their constitutional rights — the site offers Red Cards in nearly 20 languages. Mayor Lisa Brown said the webpage supports residents regardless of immigration status — giving essential legal information to help them feel safe.  KXLY
  • Senator Maria Cantwell reintroduced a bill on August 1 to upgrade the weather radio service so that more Americans receive timely alerts—her plan includes $25 million per year for operations plus an extra $100 million for system upgrades. In Washington, the current 17 national radio transmitters will be modernized if the bill passes.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Spokane is facing rising jail costs—its contract bill growing from about $4 million to $7.5 million—after funds from its Criminal Justice Assistance Fund were redirected to other city needs, leaving two months of unpaid fees and a 180-day notice requirement for contract termination; SRHD plans a back-to-school health clinic at Shaw Middle School on August 27 to offer free immunizations addressing COVID and HPV hesitancy.  Spokane Public Radio

  • Ben Gregg played in the NBA Summer League with the Celtics in Las Vegas and now will join Strasbourg in France for a one-year deal — he expects to get more minutes and learn a new style of play. Gregg spent 4½ seasons at Gonzaga and said seeing old teammates in different jerseys left a lasting impression — a feeling he hopes to build on in Europe.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The annual Spike and Dig Volleyball Tournament returns to Dwight Merkel Field this weekend as local teams prepare to compete. Forecasts call for scattered thunderstorms in the morning with winds up to 15 mph & a 60% chance of rain.  KHQ
