- ➤ LifeCenter Northwest hosted an organ donation celebration at CenterPlace Regional Event Center to honor those who donated organs, eyes and tissues — the event marked the start of similar celebrations planned in Spokane and across the Northwest. KHQ
- ➤ The emergency food pantry at Meals on Wheels in downtown Spokane has been empty for weeks—leaving 45 to 50 seniors without their only hot meal while rising costs and demand have increased daily meal deliveries from 430 to over 630; donations of nonperishable food and hygiene products are being urged. - ➤ A free Summer Splash Party is set for next Saturday, August 9, at 211 North Wall Street from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.—the event will feature water games, hands-on activities, music and local entertainment for families. - ➤ Spokane Valley Fire Department responded to a fire near East Coyote Rock Drive where about 1 acre of grass and shrub burned — teams from the Department of Natural Resources were on the scene. FOX 28 Spokane
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Washington’s Department of Fish and Wildlife killed an adult wolf from the Togo Pack on Wednesday in Ferry County following three cattle depredations, even though 80% of the state’s wolf packs have not caused livestock losses. Environmental advocate Ronald D. Reed says the state must improve its oversight and change outdated practices—calling for reliable monitoring and use of proven nonlethal deterrents. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Spokane County submitted plans to expand the stabilization center at 1302 W. Gardner Ave.—the project will add a 17,000-square-foot crisis relief center with new intake rooms, a lobby, and connected outdoor space at an estimated cost of $11.5 million using funds from opioid lawsuit disbursements. Inland Imaging will remodel its 801 S. Stevens location into a breast center this fall, and a 21-unit apartment building has opened on South Hill. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ Spokane County declined Spokane City Council’s July 28 request to join in selecting the new director of SCRAPS as county CEO Scott Simmons said SCRAPS employees work for the county—he noted unresolved legal issues with recent city code changes and uncertainty over renewing the inter-local agreement.
