CRIME NEWS

  • A suspect was arrested on multiple arson charges after fire crews and state officials responded to between 11 and 16 brush fires along the Spokane River and Centennial Trail in Millwood on Saturday, August 2—firefighters stopped the initial fires by 8 a.m. and contained a second fire on East Coyote Rock Drive just after 1 p.m.—and a woman was apprehended based on witness accounts linking her to the fires.  KHQ
  • Spokane Valley and Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 44-year-old Sara M. Beal on August 2 after brush fires were set along the Centennial Trail, charging her with two counts of Arson 2nd Degree and an outstanding warrant for Abuse of 911 Emergency System. Evidence including pillow filling, matches, and flammable hair spray was found in her purse—details that linked her to the fires.  Spokane County

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Spokane County Regional Water Reclamation Facility will conduct a mixing zone study of the Spokane River today using an environmentally safe red dye called Rhodamine WT to track how wastewater from Spokane Community College mixes into the river. The dye will be added around 11 a.m. and be visible until 3 p.m. near the intersection of North Havana Street - East Upriver Drive as required by the facility's NPDES permit.  KHQ

  • Financial experts say workers in their 20s should start saving immediately for retirement. CFO Martha Prestin of O Bee Credit Union advises beginning with a small percentage of each paycheck—gradually increasing contributions while keeping emergency funds to take full advantage of employer matching and tax benefits.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane launched a website offering immigrant and refugee rights information in 19 languages to help residents amid increased immigration crackdowns. Washington State University will start a new seven-week ASL course on August 18 to help future health workers better communicate with deaf patients.  Spokane Public Radio
