ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A crash in the Trentwood neighborhood on Wellesley and Calvin Road just before 8:00 p.m. injured an 8-year-old boy—police said the suspected drinking driver hit the boy on his bicycle near his driveway before crashing into a nearby home where no one was hurt.  KHQ

CRIME NEWS

  • Former nurse practitioner Amanda Proctor was arraigned on charges of arson, malicious mischief, stalking and violation of protection orders after she set fire to a detached garage near a neighbor's home – she pleaded not guilty and her trial will begin on October 27 with a pretrial hearing on October 6.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • The Washington State Patrol has activated a Missing Indigenous Person Alert for Tabatha Fagundes, who was last seen in Spokane near W. Mallon Ave on July 21 at about 10:30 p.m.-anyone with information is urged to call 9-1-1.  FOX 28 Spokane

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fire departments in Spokane County saw a record number of fire calls in July as Spokane Valley Fire answered nearly 2,300 calls—its busiest month in 75 years. Spokane Fire noted an increase in brush fires countywide and firefighters now use mutual aid agreements to handle multiple incidents and check suspicious fires.  KXLY
  • Spokane city residents voted on Tuesday to add a $15-a-year aquifer protection tax that will help keep drinking water clean. The tax, which passed with about 74% support, will fund water monitoring—starting in 2026—and other projects to protect the aquifer for 20 years.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane Valley voters approved a 0.1% sales tax increase on Tuesday to help fund new police equipment and hire more deputies—expected to generate at least $2.6 million in 2026 and cover the cost of additional officers over the next two years.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Initial primary results in Spokane Valley show that incumbent City Councilwoman Laura Padden advanced in Position 7 with 52% of the vote plus Salvage yard manager Brad Hohn received 35% while student Joseph Ghodsee got 11.9%. In the open Position 1 race, businessman Mike Kelly leads with 45.3% as software engineer Kris Pockell holds 32.7% with nearly 6,000 ballots still to be counted before the general election on Nov. 4.  The Spokesman-Review
