COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spokane County Sheriff’s Office today mourns the loss of Sergeant Kenneth Salas — killed in the line of duty. A heat advisory is in effect from noon today to 8 p.m. PDT Tuesday — residents are urged to stay cool and drink plenty of fluids.  KHQ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Spokane community mourned Sergeant Kenneth Salas (59) who died in the line of duty on Saturday morning after being struck by a motorcycle while he was removing hay bales from a truck on I-90 near Four Lakes, and he served 34 years while planning to retire at the end of September.  KXLY
  • A man was rescued by Spokane County Fire District 8 after being stuck in the mud for several hours in the Saltese Flats area—a heat advisory is in effect from noon today to 8 p.m. Tuesday.  KHQ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, Dave & Buster's opens on East Mansfield Avenue with over 100 arcade games, a full menu and bar, and a grand ribbon-cutting where the first 100 guests get free games. The venue is the chain's first in the Inland Northwest & has hired over 160 local staff.  FOX 28 Spokane

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two Spokane Public Schools, Audubon Elementary and Mullan Road Elementary, were recognized in early August as America’s Healthiest Schools by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. The schools earned honors for programs in health services, nutrition, physical education, and social-emotional learning (including these key areas) and are among only four schools in Washington to receive the award.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane updated its Complete Streets law to require sidewalks and bike lane improvements when roads are rebuilt. Mayor Lisa Brown signed the law after removing cost exceptions and aligning it with city and state plans—ensuring safer travel for pedestrians and bicyclists.  The Spokesman-Review

SPORTS NEWS

  • Gonzaga coach Mark Few said his oldest son AJ Few offered a key suggestion during an NCAA Tournament game against Houston that helped narrow a 14‐point gap before the loss—he made the call when the team was scrambling. After years on his father's staff, AJ joined Miami's Summer League coaching staff to work toward his goal of coaching in the NBA.  The Spokesman-Review
