  • NonStop Local launched a fundraising campaign to raise $82,000 for the Bite 2 Go program—addressing a shortage that risks 300 local children losing their weekend meals due to food insecurity.  KHQ
  • On August 12, officials announced that the late Carol F. See — a Spokane Valley veteran known for her love of cats — left $126,900 to SCRAPS and requested that her needlepoint cat picture be displayed on a plaque, while County Chair Mary Kuney said the donation will help SCRAPS care for more cats.  FOX 28 Spokane

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Washington State Patrol continues investigating the crash that killed 59-year-old SCSO Sergeant Kenneth Salas on I-90 near Four Lakes on Saturday when he was hit by a motorcycle while moving a hay bale—officials remind drivers to move over for emergency vehicles and secure loads to avoid dangers.  KXLY
  • Spokane Valley firefighters are handling a multi-vehicle rollover crash near 8th and Woodlawn—there is a downed power pole and first responders ask people to keep clear of the area.  KXLY

CRIME NEWS

  • Spokane police arrested 23-year-old Trinity Christenson Friday after she admitted to shooting 27-year-old Coal Strode outside an apartment complex at 15 E. Central Ave—she said she acted out of fear from repeated harassment and her arraignment is set for Aug. 26.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane Police Department executed a search warrant at a home on North Freya Street and uncovered drugs, money, guns and explosives including a military hand grenade, a bomblet from a cluster bomb and a modified firework—explosive specialists safely removed the items while criminal charges remain pending.  KXLY

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new performing arts center in Spokane Valley has received over $1 million in donations and is 19% complete on East Mansfield Avenue near the Spokane Valley Mall—funding that will resume construction and cover Spokane Valley Summer Theater's 500% rent increase. The center, set to open in 2026, is expected to generate $32 million annually for the community.  KXLY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Spokane County Fire District 3 warned of increased fire danger today and has banned all recreational fires and yard burning due to dry and breezy conditions that boost wildfire risks—residents are advised to delay mowing dry grass, secure trailer chains, and dispose of cigarettes safely while calling 911 if a fire is spotted.  KXLY
