COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The memorial service for Sergeant Ken Salas will be held at Spokane Convention Center on Wednesday, August 20 at 1:00 p.m. The service is open to the public though seating is limited (the procession route will be announced soon) as the community gathers to honor his long career.  Spokane County
  • Big Table is planning its 11th annual Eats Around the World Mission Impossible event for October 6 at the Davenport Grand Hotel — the event will serve global cuisine from Spain, Lebanon, and South Africa with live music, raffle prizes, and a live auction featuring renowned chefs who support local restaurant and hotel workers.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Riverfront Park in downtown Spokane hosts one of the largest multicultural celebrations this weekend. Unity in the Community, which began in 1994, will feature international booths, a youth fair, a health fair, and live entertainment from 10 a.m. — 3 p.m.  KHQ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On August 9th at 7:40 a.m., a fatal collision took the life of Sergeant Kenneth Salas when a motorcycle struck him as he cleared debris from the road—authorities urge witnesses to come forward with information.  Spokane County

CRIME NEWS

  • A Spokane man, 40-year-old Charles McClain, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for supplying drug dealers with fentanyl and other narcotics after agents uncovered drugs, a gun, and $18,000 during a search of his apartment—evidence of his operation in eastern Washington.  KXLY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Spokane Fire District 5 lowered evacuation levels for residents near the Crescent Road wildfire—now designating some as Level 1 GET READY and others as Level 2 GET SET while the fire burns about 893 acres by the border of Lincoln and Spokane Counties.  KXLY
  • Kootenai County Commissioners debated extra safety measures for a new truck refueling station’s 12,000-gallon diesel tank placed over the Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer to protect the region’s drinking water. The planning department and Panhandle Health District will submit an updated containment plan for final board review — officials stress that stronger measures are needed to prevent environmental harm.  Spokane Public Radio
