ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A car crash involving two vehicles caused serious injuries and blocked the northbound lane on State Route 291 near Suncrest—according to Washington State Patrol.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • West Valley School District prepared for Seth Woodard Elementary’s return by starting morning patrols with a resource officer and armed deputy and by upgrading West Valley High School’s front doors with ballistic treatment — a move to help keep students safe. In contrast, Spokane Public Schools use a campus safety team that works with students to build close bonds.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Monday, August 25, West Maxwell Avenue will be closed from North Walnut Street to North Elm Street for traffic signal upgrades as part of the Maxwell Pettet to Walnut Bike/Pedestrian project — detours will be provided for drivers and pedestrians until Friday, September 19.  KHQ
  • Preston McCollam and Steve Garvin are competing to be named the next Spokane County Prosecutor after Larry Haskell resigned — county commissioners must select a replacement by Sept. 16 while the two prepare for a heated primary race on Aug. 4, 2026. Both attorneys have more than 25 years of legal experience and plan to modernize the office and improve support for victims.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The Washington Department of Transportation will begin mobile lane closures for street sweeping on I-90 from Geiger Boulevard near the Spokane Airport to Pines Road in Spokane Valley starting Sunday, August 24 at 4 a.m. until 1 p.m. through Wednesday, August 27—drivers are advised to slow down.  KXLY
  • Spokane Valley will begin a remodel on its police department building at 12710 E. Sprague Ave. in September and finish in January using $1.4 million from city funds raised by voters to add more officers — the work will update offices, a gym, and storage while police continue to work in temporary spaces.  The Spokesman-Review
