COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bite2Go, a program of Second Harvest, fed 9,500 kids last school year and now expects to help 13,500 students this year— the group needs $80,000 and was featured on NonStop Local’s KHQ station.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Nearly 100 members of the Red Knights Motorcycle Club rode to the Ronald McDonald House on Saturday — delivering about $5,000 in supplies, including toilet paper and snacks, to families of children receiving medical care. The donation drive underscored their commitment to community support.  KXLY

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Spokane will host a high-quality reproduction of the handwritten Bible — the first commissioned by a Benedictine monastery in over 500 years — for about four months starting in September. Karen Byrne said programming details are still in progress as the exhibit aims to bring together art and faith.  The Spokesman-Review

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today in Spokane Valley, temperatures are expected to hit the mid-90s—smoke in parts of the region has raised air quality concerns and led to a Heat Advisory until Wednesday. Cooler weather will return by mid-week with highs dropping into the 80s by Thursday and milder conditions expected for Labor Day weekend.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Monday, August 25, West Maxwell Avenue between North Walnut Street and North Elm Street will be closed for traffic as the city upgrades signals until September 19. Drivers on Northbound Ash Street, eastbound Pettet Drive, and westbound West Maxwell Avenue will face detours — local access remains during non-working hours.  KXLY

HEALTH NEWS

  • After her surgery in March 2024, Frances Overbay became bed-bound in a Spokane Valley nursing home where she was denied regular physical therapy and care, and she died two days after her 85th birthday. Nursing homes in the area have far more health citations than the national average—raising concerns over quality of care and staff shortages.  The Spokesman-Review

  • Eastern Washington defensive end Brandon Thomas trains hard at fall camp on his prosthetic leg while facing pain and challenges from an amputation done to treat cancer. He, a walk-on with the Eagles, plans to play this season before retiring from football as he pursues teaching—his commitment shows his strength on and off the field.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane school officials said cheerleading is growing popular with both girls and boys as teams rely more on stunting and tumbling for competitive events.
