COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Thrive Spokane celebrated three years of helping refugee families at an event held Friday at its downtown hotel near Interstate 90, where supporters gave out shoes and supplies. Executive director Mark Finney said the agency first aided Ukrainians and now helps people from over a dozen nations — showing our community remains safe and welcoming.  Spokane Public Radio

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A collision is blocking the left lane on I-90 westbound near Hamilton Street, according to WSDOT, and a heat advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. Wednesday + drivers are advised to take extra caution.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Spokane Public Schools and the Spokane Education Association reached a tentative agreement for a new three-year contract as the current deal expires at summer's end—union members will vote on the terms today to finalize the agreement for educators. District spokesperson Ryan Lancaster said more details will be shared with staff and families after the vote.  The Spokesman-Review

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Saturday morning along the Centennial Trail, Katelyn Scott of Spokane Riverkeeper saw very low water levels on the Spokane River when a blue heron fished in a nearly dry spot while Patrick Maher from Avista said dam gate closures, high heat, and water loss to a low aquifer have created a perfect storm—threatening fish habitat.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane Fire Department Chief Julie O’Berg will retire on October 6 after 36 years of service. Mayor Lisa Brown has named Assistant Chief Tom Williams as her successor who will take over on October 7 — O’Berg became the first woman to lead the department.  FOX 28 Spokane
  • Today, the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office warns residents to follow fire safety rules before Labor Day weekend by keeping grills away from buildings and checking car exhausts (residents are also told not to use consumer fireworks as state law forbids them). In 2024, fire crews answered over 4,600 Labor Day incidents that led to $2 million in losses, and officials expect these measures to lower risks in upcoming celebrations.  FOX 28 Spokane

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Spokane County resident was presumed positive for measles by the Spokane Regional Health District after visiting high-risk areas and several public facilities on August 24—health officials plan to confirm the diagnosis by August 27 and urge everyone to check their MMR vaccination status.  FOX 28 Spokane

SPORTS NEWS

  • Spokane school districts are adding extra sports teams to meet a record rise in student participation as students grab new opportunities after pandemic restrictions eased—West Valley High School created five volleyball teams with 90 sign-ups while Spokane Public Schools expanded its football program. The changes come as local sports programs boost engagement and offer more chances for students to play and connect.  KXLY
